Magic Moments – July Edition

Valencia D. Clay (Instagram) is an American teacher who I’ve been following on Instagram ever since I saw the video I want to talk to you about in this post.

So this video pops up on my discovery page and ever curious me clicks on it and starts watching. What happened next was so amazing.

A young black sister, dark skinned in complexion, explained how she felt inadequate about the depth of her brown skin as she’d always been told and felt like the lighter skinned sisters were adored for being ‘pretty’ whilst she was told she wasn’t.

Becoming visibly emotional, the young girl choking on her words continued until it was hard for her to speak. What happened thereafter in the group, led by Valencia, was truly a moving moment for young women everywhere. . . 10 seconds of uplifting from her peers about all the positive things she is. The dismantling of doubt and pain inflicted upon her from the ideologies of others began and the effect on the young woman herself was truly something.

This moment was important for not just young women or even women of colour alone but for all women, as we’re constantly being told (or reading comments about or it being shoved in our faces on social media) that we are not enough of this and not enough of that. Our skin should be this complexion for us to be classed as ‘pretty’, our bodies should be shaped like this, our hair should be like that, we should take pictures like this, live our life like that, in order to be defined as any synonym to attractive. When in reality, no two of us are the same. Individualism seems less and less celebrated by the day yet it’s exactly that which makes us really beautiful.

No one is you and that is your power”

No complexion, race, size, body type, height, hair type or smile is more superior than the other. We all have something that someone on this earth will love us so good for.

So love yours and don’t let anyone tell you that you’re not good enough, because believe me when I say you are so much more than that! You are perfection.
